Campus Medical Clinic to Serve Uninsured Students
School officials opened a medical clinic last week at Suva Intermediate School to treat the scores of local students who are uninsured.
The clinic will be staffed one afternoon a week by a volunteer doctor from Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Medical Center.
Too often, students without medical insurance come to school ill and unable to concentrate on their work, said officials from the Montebello Unified School District.
“We have a group of students whose parents may be working two or three jobs and they don’t have medical care,” said Suva Principal Glenda Golobay.
The clinic was opened in the school nurse’s office with a $7,500 grant from Kaiser Permanente.
School clinics have become a growing trend in Southern California. In 1998, the county Board of Supervisors announced a plan to pump as much as $50 million a year into expanding a network of school-based health clinics in the Los Angeles Unified School District.
Kaiser Permanente supports two other clinics at schools in southeast Los Angeles County.
