Gospel Rock

Willie Chambers of the legendary Chambers Brothers rock band performs Friday night at B.B. King’s in Universal CityWalk. Lester, Joe, Willie and George Chambers were the nucleus of the original Chambers Brothers Group in the 1960s. The Mississippi-born siblings first sang together in church, and gospel music remained a major influence on their style. The band first gained national attention at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. Its gospel-tinged sounds included such hits as “Time Has Come Today,” “People Get Ready” and “Love, Peace and Happiness.” Guitarist Willie Chambers performs Friday with his own group, but the music created by the Chambers Brothers remains the core of his work.

Harp

Windham Hill recording artist and Celtic harpist Lisa Lynne Franco performs Saturday night in Glendale. Although her musical roots are in rock, Franco is highly regarded today as a composer and interpreter of New Age music on the Celtic harp and other instruments, including the mandolin, bouzouki, dulcimer and bandora. Her former band, Celestial Winds, sold over 150,000 copies of its independent recordings and performed throughout North America. As a solo artist, Franco has twice topped the New Age music charts. Her latest solo CD, “Seasons of the Soul,” is her second album for Windham Hill.
