Bumstead’s First Home Run Finishes Matador Victory in 11

Mike Bumstead’s first home run for Cal State Northridge could not have been more timely.

Bumstead’s leadoff shot off of Noel Clark in the 11th inning Thursday gave the Matadors a 6-5 nonconference baseball victory over Portland at Northridge.

Adrian Mendoza (1-0) loaded the bases in the top of the inning but recorded three of his four strikeouts to escape.

Portland (9-8) scored twice in the 10th off Merrill Dunn, the second run scoring on a passed ball after Mendoza came in to pitch.

Tim Arroyo’s two-run double in the 10th tied the game, 5-5, for the Matadors (9-13).

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Northridge d. Rutgers, 7-15, 15-4, 15-9, 15-7--Eckhard Walter had 22 kills to lead the host Matadors to a nonconference victory.

Junior Mosones had 17 kills and J.P. Jandreau added 16 for Northridge (7-10).

Rutgers is 7-11.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Calabasas 12, Campbell Hall 6--Nick Weiss swept three sets at No. 1 singles for the Coyotes (4-4) in a nonleague victory at Valley College.

Weiss defeated Adam Zunder, 6-3, defeated Michael Sands, 6-0, and defeated Matt Richards, 6-1.

Westlake 16, Agoura 2--Alex Yaftali and Narbe Zohrabi each swept three sets at the top two singles spots for the host Warriors in a Marmonte League match.

Agoura is 4-1, 2-1.

Matt Pardee and Aaron Bert surrendered only two games in three sets at No. 1 doubles for Westlake (3-0, 2-0).

Crespi 16, Valencia 2--Stephen Amritraj and Mike Smith each swept three sets in singles, and Hutson Olsen and Steven Bondy swept at No. 1 doubles for the Celts (5-0) at Valencia (2-3).

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Simi Valley d. Thousand Oaks, 18-16, 6-15, 15-6, 15-8--Jon Moreno had 20 kills, and brothers Tyler and Ryan Meek combined for 33 kills for the Pioneers in a Marmonte League victory at Thousand Oaks.

Royal d. Westlake, 15-6, 15-1, 15-10--David Russell had nine kills and four blocks for the host Highlanders (5-0, 3-0) in a Marmonte victory over Westlake (3-1, 0-1).
