Furniture Upholsterer Has Designs on Cost Savings

Share
SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

I first heard about Valley Upholstering a few days after acquiring a roll of fabric for some dining chairs I was about to tackle.

Its rate for recovering chair seats was so good, at $25 each, I decided to check out the quality of the work and forego the do-it-myself plan.

The truck arrived precisely on time to pick up the seats and delivered them at precisely the promised time. The work was flawless.

Upon further investigation I found the phrase that should ring a loud bell with any bargain shopper and also explain Valley Upholstering’s low rates. The company offers trade prices to the consumer, the same prices it charges major department stores and decorating firms, which represent more than 50% of its business.

If my dining chairs had upholstered backs, the charge would have been $75 per chair, a piano bench $60, a king-sized headboard $130, a club chair or recliner $285, an occasional chair $199 and an ottoman $125.

These prices are for labor only and do not include fabric. Unlike many upholsterers, when the customer provides the fabric, the labor charge is not increased.

There are many custom features you can select. If you want the fabric you’ve selected--either at Valley Upholstering or elsewhere--quilted, it’s $18 a yard. The company also does custom chair pads for $30 each.

Turnaround time is usually four to six weeks. Pickup and delivery within a 25-mile radius is free.
