Rooting for a Fight Seems Quite Taxing
Apparently, Californians are soon to be subject to a unique and unpredictable form of taxation. Namely, the “we would all like to see Oscar De La Hoya fight in his hometown” tax.
Promoter Bob Arum and Staples Center officials plan to “appeal” to Gov. Gray Davis for a tax break on anticipated revenues generated by the De La Hoya-Shane Mosley fight in June. Further, it is the intent of California State Assembly Speaker Antonio Villaraigosa to “come up with legislation” to address this issue because “failure to do so would hurt De La Hoya and keep him from fighting in his own city” and he also “feels there is a willingness for [the Assembly] to work on the matter”!
This is a blatant attempt to extort taxpayer money. The promoter, Staples Center and the boxers are guaranteed millions. Everyone reaping huge profits at the expense of taxpayers who stand to lose at least $350,000 if this swindle isn’t stopped.
