No. 6 UCLA (19-11) vs. No. 3 Maryland (25-9)

Share

* About UCLA: The Bruins have outscored their opponents, 77.3-66, during their seven-game winning streak and also hold a 49.6%-40.4% advantage in shooting, 42.6%-30.3% in three-point shooting and 40.3-32 in rebounding. One more victory would mark their longest run since 12 in a row in 1996-97. Jason Kapono’s 17-point second half (his total for the game) against Ball State on Thursday marked the third time in six games he has scored at least 15 points after the break.

* About Maryland: These Terrapins do not resemble the ones who routed the Bruins by 16 points early last season in Puerto Rico. Gone are Steve Francis, Terrell Stokes, Laron Profit and Obinna Ekezie, among others, replaced by an opening lineup of one junior, three sophomores and a freshman point guard, Steve Blake. But one of the regular starters, small forward Danny Miller, did not play in the first-round victory over Iona because of an ankle injury and his status for today is uncertain. Coach Gary Williams said he would like to get 15 minutes from Miller.

* Keys to the game: Blake had seven turnovers against two assists in 34 minutes Thursday, and his backcourt mate, Juan Dixon, had four turnovers. It’s a continuation of a season-long problem of dealing with defensive pressure. If the Bruins can apply more, with a press or otherwise, they can cut the Terrapins off at the head. A 6-8 center, Lonny Baxter, will start for Maryland, so UCLA needs to capitalize on a size advantage inside, as it did against Ball State, Dan Gadzuric grabbing 12 rebounds and Jerome Moiso and JaRon Rush each getting seven.
