Canadian Struggle Reemerging

The rivalry between Canadian Finance Minister Paul Martin and Prime Minister Jean Chretien boiled into the open once more Saturday as Martin publicly declared his interest in eventually replacing Chretien.

It was the first time Ottawa political veterans could recall him openly launching a challenge for the top spot, although he couched it in a declaration of continued loyalty to Chretien.

After Martin lost a battle for the Liberal Party leadership to Chretien in 1990, he had served as part of Chretien’s team, appearing at Liberal events across the country but always careful not to campaign openly so as not to appear disloyal.

“I don’t think it’s a state secret that I ran for the leadership in 1990. It’s not a state secret that if that possibility arose in the future, that it’s something that I would consider,” he told reporters.
