What Happened: The Waves, who press at every turn, befuddled the Cowboys at the outset and built a 5-1 lead. Oklahoma State Coach Eddie Sutton had seen enough and called a timeout. Then he did the one thing Indiana Coach Bobby Knight didn’t. He adjusted to the Pepperdine defense. Oklahoma State remained calm, started getting the ball inside to Fredrik Jonzen, and was able to take the halftime lead.

What You Won’t Find in the Box Score: The fans in Buffalo obviously adopted Pepperdine as their favorite for this tournament. Any time Pepperdine made a run, the crowd came alive.

Winning Numbers: Oklahoma State pulled down 22 rebounds and scored 16 points on layups, a sign it had solved Pepperdine’s trap defense.

Wrong Numbers: Pepperdine made only 39% of its shots and was only three of seven from the free-throw line. The Waves also made only four of 12 three-point attempts.

Leading Scorers: Pepperdine--Brandon Armstrong, 7. Oklahoma State--Jonzen, 12.

SECOND HALF

What Happened: Oklahoma State finally came to life midway through the second half with the score 44-44. And the Cowboys did it as the Waves struggled from long range. Pepperdine stunned Indiana by making nine of 17 three-point shots. But the Waves missed their first 10 of the second half Sunday.

What You Won’t Find in the Box Score: The Waves never gave up, and made a game of it again, as Armstrong made two three-point shots and Tezale Archie made another to break the drought in the final two minutes and pull Pepperdine within five. The Waves left with their heads high. “When we first got here there wasn’t but two Pepperdine fans--our athletic director and his wife,” Archie said. “By the end, half the building was chanting for us. Hopefully, we can start a dynasty.”

Winning Numbers: While the Waves were misfiring, the Cowboys pulled away with an 18-4 run to take a 62-48 lead.

Wrong Numbers: Pepperdine finished the game seven of 32 from three-point range.
