Residents are poised to fight the Brea Olinda Unified School District over the possibility that bond money might be used to help build a school.
District voters passed a $17.5-million school bond last spring to modernize schools and build more classrooms. The money was not supposed to be used to build an entire new school.
Since the election, projected growth from approved and proposed housing developments has convinced most school board members that the district will have to build an elementary school in addition to expanding the high school and junior high.
Developer fees from the Olinda Ranch project would pay for half of the new school. Parent Betty Walsh and other residents believe the district intends to build the rest with bond money.
But Assistant Supt. Gary Goff said that isn’t so. Bond money would only be used to add classrooms to the portion of the school that the developer’s money did not pay for.
