A Dynamite Exit for the Kingdome

In less than 20 seconds, the 24-year-old Seattle Kingdome was reduced to rubble Sunday, demolished to make way for a new stadium. Gelatin dynamite was packed into about 5,800 holes to collapse the former home of baseball’s Mariners and football’s Seahawks. A $430-million football stadium is planned for the site where the Kingdome, completed in 1976 at a cost of $67 million, stood. The demolition had little impact on the Mariners, because the team moved into the $517-million Safeco Field last summer. As for the Seahawks, their new stadium will be ready in two years. Until then, the NFL team will play at the University of Washington stadium.
