A 17-year-old boy who was shot in the head Wednesday a few blocks from Monrovia High School became the city’s first homicide victim in more than three years, authorities said.

At about 3:30 p.m., a gunman in a black Honda Civic pulled up to two 17-year-old boys who were standing in an alley near the 300 block of West Lemon Avenue. The gunman fired several shots, wounding one boy in the leg, said Monrovia Police Lt. James Olds.

The other boy was pronounced dead at 8:10 p.m. at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Olds said.

“The incident may be gang-related,” said Sgt. Mike Head.

Head said it was unclear whether the boys who were shot were students at Monrovia High School.
