A car struck an 11-year-old girl crossing the street with a toddler in her arms Wednesday, injuring both children, authorities said.

The incident happened about 6:15 p.m. in the 8500 block of International Avenue, said Jim Wells, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The girl suffered minor abrasions and was taken to a local hospital.

Paramedics transported the toddler, an 18-month-old boy who may have lost consciousness after the collision, to Childrens Hospital in Los Angeles. The boy suffered a slight skull fracture and slight bleeding in the brain, but was listed in fair condition, said hospital spokesman Steve Rutledge.

“He’s not likely to need surgery,” Rutledge said. “He’s awake and alert and his vital signs are stable. We’re keeping him overnight for observation.”

Sgt. Rod Grahek of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Valley Traffic Division said the car was not going very fast when it struck the children, who were crossing the street in the middle of the block.

Police are investigating the accident. Grahek said the relationship between the two children was not known.
