Police on Thursday reduced the death toll of a head-on bus crash to 74 and said a British man was among the dead.

The dead had been numbered at 101 in Wednesday’s accident in western Kenya in which two buses crashed head-on and burst into flames.

The name of the Briton, who has been missing since the crash, was not released.

A police statement also said five Asians and two Arabs were among the dead, but it was difficult to determine whether they were Kenyan citizens.

The statement said 61 people were still hospitalized after the crash just outside the tea-growing center of Kericho, 125 miles northwest of Nairobi, the capital.

It said the dead included 30 women and seven children. According to unofficial figures, the accident would still be the worst in Kenya’s 37 years of independence.
