Pendleton’s Throw Leads Esperanza

Travis Pendleton moved into the No. 3 spot on the all-time Orange County list Thursday when the Esperanza senior threw the discus 197 feet 8 inches in the Aztecs’ 88-34 victory over Huntington Beach in a Sunset League boys’ track and field meet at Huntington Beach.

Pendleton also improved his state-leading and personal-best mark by just over six feet. Pendleton, who finished third in state in the discus last season, achieved his previous best mark on the same field during the Surf City Invitational Saturday.

Scott Moser of Huntington Beach holds the county record with a throw of 213-11 in 1997.

In other the Sunset League track meets:

Edison 91, Los Alamitos 40--Mike Wong set personal bests in winning the long jump (21-1 3/4) and triple jump (40-10 3/4) for Edison.

Fountain Valley 69, Marina 66--Joe Lourenco won the triple jump in 44-2 for Fountain Valley (2-0 in league).

In the Century League:

El Modena 77, Villa Park 52--Jordan Czaykowski won the 110 hurdles (15.4), 300 hurdles (41.1), long jump (21-4 1/2) and triple jump (43-7) for El Modena (5-1, 2-0). Dwayne McCabe cleared 14-0 in the pole vault for the Vanguards.

In the Empire League:

Cypress 104, Loara 30--Richard Cradit won the long jump with a mark of 21-1 1/2 and the 200 in 23.3 for Cypress (4-0, 2-0).

In the Golden West League:

Tustin 100, Saddleback 24--Dillon Hayes won the shotput with a season-best 51-8 for Tustin.

In the Orange League:

Valencia 96, Magnolia 31--Carlos Perez threw a personal-best 52-2 1/2 to win the shotput and Joe Eddleman had a personal-best 160-8 to win the discus for Valencia (5-0, 3-0).

Western 81, Anaheim 51--DaJuan Pannell won the 100 yards in 10.4 and the 200 yards in 23.2 for Western (3-1, 1-1).

In the South Coast League:

El Toro 109, San Clemente 27--El Toro’s Brad Whitfield cleared 6-2 to win the high jump and also finished second to teammate Shaun Blackholly in the 400 (53.0).

In Century League girls’ track and field:

Foothill 89, Canyon 47--Jamie Burke won the 100 (12.9), long jump (16-2 1/4) and triple jump (32-3 1/4) for Foothill (2-0 in league).

In the Golden West League:

Santa Ana 97, Ocean View 28--Santa Ana’s Matala Lualemaga won the shotput with the second-best mark in the county this season (40-3) and the 15th-best in state. Lualemaga also won the discus with a throw of 117-0.

Mission Viejo 111, Capistrano Valley 24--Dana Bethel won the long jump with a season-best mark of 18-6 for Mission Viejo. Capistrano Valley’s Mychael Westervelt was second with a season-best 17-1 1/2 and Mission Viejo freshman Morgan Bethel was third (16-4 1/2).

In the Sunset League:

Edison 94, Los Alamitos 37--Eyrie Jennings won the 100 (12.8), long jump (17-6 3/4) and triple jump (37- 1/2) for Edison.

Esperanza 99, Huntington Beach 33--Shalanie Ross won the 100 in 12.3, the 200 in 25.8 and anchored the winning 400 relay (51.4) for Esperanza (2-0 in league).

In a nonleague meet:

Santa Margarita 86 1/2, Woodbridge 75 1/2--Christy Von Der Ahe paced the Eagles with season-best marks in the triple jump (35-2) and pole vault (11-0). Lori Mann also had victories in the 1,600 (5:18.01) and 3,200 (11:27.24) for host Santa Margarita.

Woodbridge was led by freshman Michelle Sanford, who improved her county-leading mark in the long jump (18-8 1/2).
