Thurston Middle School will soon be getting new communication equipment for supervisors in an attempt to increase school safety.

The equipment, which includes 12 new walkie-talkies, cost an estimated $2,000 and is being paid for with a $45,342 California Department of Education grant the middle school and Laguna Beach High School recently received.

The schools need the equipment to keep supervision at an optimum level, said Chris Duddy, assistant principal at the middle school.

The high school has not yet decided what it will spend the money on but is considering hiring a new supervisor, said Jennifer Salberg, assistant principal.
