The street lights that will illuminate new developments north of Bastanchury Road won’t shine any brighter than the rest. But their glow should cost less because they will be owned by the city instead of Southern California Edison.
The City Council recently voted to have the city take charge of the street lights to be installed in residential neighborhoods such as Pulte Homes and Vista del Verde to be built over the next 10 to 15 years.
The arrangement will save the city 15% to 20% over what it pays to lease and maintain the city’s existing street lights, which are all owned by Edison, said Public Works Director Roy Stephenson.
The deregulation of utility companies two years ago gave a 10% discount to businesses and homeowners but not to cities, he said.
The city has studied the issue of owning and operating street lights since then, he said.
