Three-time Winston Cup champion Darrell Waltrip, at 53 in the final year of an illustrious career, had a roller-coaster ride in his K mart Chevrolet.
After starting seventh and moving up to fifth in the second lap, Waltrip slid all the way to the rear of the field, 43rd place, in seven laps. Then, when every other car in the race pitted on Lap 156, Waltrip stayed on the track and was credited with leading the race.
He finished 29th.

Mayfield won $125,925, but Labonte won $135,300 for finishing second. The disparity is because of contingency money paid by manufacturers--Labonte had more decals on the side of his car that Mayfield did.
