Bulk Mail

* Bill Shonborn (letter, May 2) writes, “Senders (of junk mail) should pay full postage and not be subsidized by taxpayers.”

We taxpayers certainly do not subsidize so-called “junk mail.” In fact, the U.S. Postal Service makes a profit on it. The senders of bulk mail pay less postage, but in exchange they comply with sorting/packaging procedures that greatly reduce the USPS handling costs.

Bottom line--the sender pays less, but the USPS still makes a profit on the mailing.
