Authorities transferred a 41-year-old Encino parole violator to Men’s Central Jail early Thursday, a day after he was shot trying to escape arrest by police officers.

The man, identified as Vanulis Garafolo, remained in the jail’s hospital ward pending recovery from gunshot wounds to his upper torso, LAPD Sgt. Greg Renner said.

“He’ll be downtown for a while,” Renner said. “His injuries are not life-threatening.”

Police said that when officers arrived Wednesday afternoon to serve an arrest warrant over a parole violation--the nature of which they would not specify--two women and another man inside the house surrendered but Garafolo fled through a rear door into a backyard trailer.

He barricaded himself inside the trailer at White Oak Avenue and Burbank Boulevard, according to police.

SWAT officers were called to the scene when Garafolo allegedly claimed he had explosives. Police said Garafolo came out with a semiautomatic rifle and shot at officers, who returned fire, hitting Garafolo in the shoulder before arresting him. No explosives were found.
