Human Rights on the Agenda
U.S. Rep. Tom Campbell (R-San Jose), the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate, will be in Little Saigon in Westminster today for a town meeting to discuss his recent trip to Vietnam.
A spokesman for Campbell said the congressman went to Vietnam in December to review the status of human rights there.
He is expected to make human rights a top issue in his campaign to unseat Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein.
Feinstein is one of China’s strongest supporters in Congress, and has championed normal trade relations with the world’s biggest nation. She has also been central to negotiations to bring China into the World Trade Organization.
Campbell has argued that China’s human-rights abuses and threats against Taiwan should not be rewarded with WTO membership. He is against normalizing trade with China, insisting that it does not make sense from a political or economic standpoint.
Friday’s luncheon is sponsored by Assemblyman Ken Maddox (R-Garden Grove) and will be at the Grand Garden restaurant, 8894 Bolsa Ave. at 11:30 a.m.
Campbell will also attend a community meeting at 6:30 p.m. hosted by the Vietnamese American Public Affairs Committee. The center is at 8200 Westminster Ave.
