Curran Opens Title Defense With Heat Victory
Defending champion Tim Curran of Oxnard easily won his heat Thursday as the top-seeded surfers began competition in the MCD Defcon 4 at Lower Trestles.
Curran scored 20.50 points to edge Fred Patacchia of Hawaii, although both advanced to today’s round of 32.
Kaipo Jaquias of Hawaii had the best heat of the day, scoring 23.60, with an individual wave score of 9.35.
County surfers who advanced include Jay Larson of Huntington Beach and Gavin Beschen, Dino Andino and Chris Drummy, all of San Clemente.
In the women’s division, World Championship Tour surfers Megan Abubo of Hawaii and Trudy Todd and Kate Skarratt of Australia had the top third-round rides.
Surfing continues today at 7 a.m.
