$20-Million Gift to Aid Loyola’s Liberal Arts

LOS ANGELES — A $20-million gift from the University Hill Foundation will be used to house Loyola Marymount University’s liberal arts program at the former headquarters of Raytheon Corp., school officials announced Monday.
The gift from the Los Angeles-based foundation, comprised of wealthy business leaders who wish to remain anonymous, is one of the largest ever received by the Jesuit-run institution. The foundation originally gave it to the university’s Jesuit community of priests, which, in turn, donated it to the school, Loyola spokesman Norm Schneider said.
The first $6-million installment was paid in March and the rest of the donation will be made over the next six years, Schneider said.
It will be used to reimburse the university for its January purchase of the million-square-foot former Raytheon Corp. headquarters. The building will be renamed the Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts in honor of St. Robert Bellarmine, the famed Jesuit theologian. The building, off Lincoln Boulevard in Westchester, will house administrative and academic offices, classrooms, meeting spaces and a cafeteria.
“We are deeply grateful to the trustees of the University Hill Foundation and to the Jesuit community for this extraordinarily generous gift,” said Father Robert B. Lawton, university president.
Schneider said the foundation has made donations to Loyola and other educational institutions in the past.
