After a series of snags, police hope to activate red-light cameras at two city intersections in the next few weeks.

The two cameras--one video, one digital--were installed in early March where Alton Parkway meets Muirlands Boulevard and Gateway. Motorists who enter an intersection during a red light will be captured by the cameras and issued a $271 citation through the mail.

But a rash of paperwork snarls and minor technical problems have prevented police from activating the cameras.

The most recent problem arose last month as crews were setting up the camera that will monitor the Alton and Muirlands intersection, said Traffic Officer John Hare. The workers discovered that there was no phone line to transfer the information from the camera to the office.

Law enforcement officials are aiming to have the cameras operational in the next couple of weeks, Hare said.
