The City Council is expected to hire a design firm Tuesday to put together a $100,000 study on the best way to create an Old Towne ambience for Main Street.
The city had spent $200,000 on a study in 1992 to explore the concept of an Old Towne atmosphere, but officials said this week that a more precise study is needed before action is taken to spruce up the area.
“The previous study was conceptual,” said Pat Haley, the city’s director of community development. “It didn’t have much of a basis on the facts of the site.”
But some representatives of the Main Street area said the extra study will be a waste of time and money.
“They’ve not spent a nickel on any work here,” said Main Street plumber Louie Scull. “All the benches and stuff you see on the street was put up by the merchants here.”
