Suspect in 1996 Murder Arrested at L.A. Airport

A suspect in the 1996 murder of a La Habra man was being held in jail after being arrested Thursday night at Los Angeles International Airport. He had evaded authorities for more than four years.

Alex Jose Esquivel, 26, was arrested in connection with the murder of Robert Holguin, 46, who was shot at Cypress Avenue and Grace Street in La Habra on Feb. 17, 1996.

Officers from the La Habra Police Department, the FBI, the U.S. Marshals Service, the Orange County district attorney’s office and authorities in Mexico, where Esquivel had been living, were involved in apprehending him.

“We’re glad we’re finally able to bring this thing to a conclusion,” La Habra Police Lt. Steve Costanzo said Friday. “While it may take some time, the fact we have him in custody makes everyone feel a lot better.”

Esquivel is being held at the Orange County Jail in lieu of of $1-million bail. Arraignment is set for Monday.
