Postman Cometh for Cans

Share

More than 5,000 letter carriers will be picking up more than the mail today as they make their appointed rounds. They will be collecting cans and boxes of food.

The eighth annual “Stamp Out Hunger” campaign, sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers, is billed as the largest one-day food drive in the country. Letter carriers in Orange County last year collected more than 800,000 pounds of food, which was distributed to 240 local charitable organizations.

“Summer is when the need is the greatest,” said George Heim, Orange County coordinator for the letter carriers group. “We have a lot of people who donate money and food to food banks only around the holiday period.”

Local letter carriers are asking residents to place nonperishable food items near their mailboxes for pickup along regular mail routes.

“Just set a can of food by your mailbox,” Heim said. “We’ll pick it up.”
