After Chase, Police Shoot Huntington Beach Teenager
A masked teenager who allegedly held up a Huntington Beach homeowner was shot in the leg by police after he confronted them early Friday, authorities said.
The 17-year-old Huntington Beach youth apparently tried to commit a home invasion robbery downtown shortly after 7 a.m. but was foiled when the homeowner slammed the door in his face, police said.
The man, whose wife and children were home during the robbery attempt, then began to chase the youth, yelling to his neighbors to call 911, said Huntington Beach Lt. Luis Ochoa.
The youth, still masked, was cornered by officers at First Street between Atlanta Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway. The officers told the teenager to drop his gun and lie down, but he began walking toward them, pointing his gun at them, Ochoa said.
The four officers fired at the teenager, who was hit once in the leg.
The youth was taken to UCI Medical Center, where he was treated for his injuries, Ochoa said, adding that no one else was injured.
“It could have been much worse for him, and for the officers [too],” Ochoa said. “He is just fortunate that he was only shot in the leg.”
