Margo Kaufman’s Time Well Spent

I scanned the contents and a smile quickly came upon me when I saw there was a Margo Kaufman article (“Confessions of an Unrepentant Sloth,” April 16). I went straightaway to the page. I have always savored Margo’s writing for its humor and humanity, and this was no different.

I continued reading and smiling to myself until my eyes slipped to the italicized print at the bottom of the page, and I immediately burst into tears. I read the words over and over to myself. How can Margo be gone?

She was someone I always wished I could chat with over a bottomless cup of coffee. In the early ‘90s, I wrote her a letter telling her how much I enjoyed her work, and she sent back a lovely handwritten note. She was genuine.

It’s 11:10 p.m. and I have a plane to catch early tomorrow morning, but I’m not too busy to thank you for printing Kaufman’s last essay. You are right: She will be missed by her readers. Thanks, Margo, for making me laugh over the last 10-plus years.

Time is the thing we have the least of, and Margo Kaufman used her time to brighten my life and the lives of many others.
