Music Contest

Eleven finalists of the 52nd annual Artists of the Future competition for young classical singers will perform Saturday at the Madrid Theatre in Canoga Park. The competition is open to young singers, women 16-22 and men 17-23, who are not professionals. Winners receive cash prizes--$2,000 for first place, $1,500 second and $1,000 third.

Musical Theater

“Mamaleh!” a new musical by Mitchell Uscher and Roy Singer about four generations of Jewish women, plays this weekend at Cal State Northridge. The show has been described as “an intimate musical with touching renditions . . . and great humanity.”

Music Alfresco

Arthur B. Rubinstein will lead the Symphony in the Glen in Griffith Park on Sunday as the ensemble opens its seventh season with “Divine Mortals,” spotlighting the music of Austria, 1786-1822. The program will feature Mozart’s Overture to “The Marriage of Figaro,” Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5. Symphony in the Glen, a nonprofit organization, offers free outdoor concerts for adults and children. Rubinstein is an Emmy-winning composer who has scored more than 200 films and television programs.
