SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Three men were arrested Wednesday on suspicion of hijacking an airport shuttle bus in Mission Viejo after crashing a rental car, authorities said.

The men, whose names were not released, apparently crashed a Dodge Intrepid rental car into a traffic signal at Alicia and Marguerite parkways about 6:50 p.m., investigators said. The men then bolted from the wrecked car and forced their way onto an airport shuttle bus stopped at another intersection on Marguerite Parkway, said Sgt. Bob Wren of the Sheriff’s Department.

The men then ordered the bus operator to drive away, Wren said. “The driver was afraid,” he said, and the three men “were agitated.”

A sheriff’s deputy called to the scene of the car crash spotted the commandeered shuttle bus, and deputies made the arrests in a parking lot at La Paz Road and Marguerite, Wren said.

Investigators believe that there were four men in the Dodge at the time of the crash, Wren said. Three were transported to Orange County Jail, Wren said.
