Firm Hired to Retrofit City Hall to Aid Disabled

The Community Development Commission awarded Warvi Construction Inc. of Huntington Beach a contract Tuesday to retrofit City Hall.

The retrofit will bring the structure into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, requiring that disabled citizens have equal access to public and private facilities.

Work will include modifying the Public Works Department and city clerk’s office counters for the disabled.

An electronically operated pullout table will also be installed at the public-address podium, and a ramp will be built in council chambers.

“We want to make sure that our offices are upgraded to comply with ADA standards,” Ismile Noorbaksh, the city’s public-works director, said at the meeting.

Warvi Construction’s bid of $39,720 was $37,780 lower than the $77,500 Noorbaksh, an engineer, had estimated.

The city will be reimbursed by the Orange County Housing and Community Development Department upon completion of the project.

Construction will begin July 15 and is scheduled to end Sept. 1. During construction, Noorbaksh said, two or three council meetings will probably be moved to the Recreation and Community Center across the street from City Hall.
