Baby Found Abandoned in Trash Bin

A man checking a trash bin in Boyle Heights for recyclables found a newborn boy who had been stashed beneath garbage and pinned down by a board, police said Thursday.

The baby was cold to the touch and so weak he could barely cry, said David Valverde, who discovered the infant Monday morning in the 3100 block of Wynwood Lane.

Police said the infant remains in critical condition at a hospital.

When Valverde began digging through a pile of rubbish, he thought he heard a small cat. Then he spotted what looked like a doll, which began to cry.

“It was alive, but it was really, really cold,” Valverde said.

The infant, with his umbilical cord still attached, was probably about an hour or two old when he was found, said Dr. Joseph Altamirano of White Memorial Medical Center.

Altamirano said doctors worked to bring the infant’s temperature up to normal. The baby probably will survive, Altamirano said.

Det. Howard Beardsley of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Abused Child Unit asked anyone who might know something about the baby to call (213) 485-6421.
