Robbery Suspect Pleads No Contest
A Hawthorne woman who allegedly provided a getaway vehicle for a Malibu bank heist last September pleaded no contest Thursday to an accessory charge.
Kim Sheri Bailey, 31, is scheduled for sentencing July 13 in Malibu Superior Court. She could face one year in county jail, said Deputy Dist. Atty. Martin Herscovitz.
Bailey is the third person to plead no contest or guilty to charges involving the Sept. 10 holdup of a Bank of America branch on Heathcliff Road.
James Franklin Johnson, 20, who pleaded no contest to two counts of robbery and one count of attempted robbery, was sentenced to one year in county jail. And Myron Keith Edwards, 29, was sentenced to a 15-year jail term after pleading guilty to robbery and attempted robbery last year.
Edwards allegedly held up the bank with a MAC 11 semiautomatic weapon and escaped with $8,000 as Bailey and Johnson waited outside in Bailey’s silver sedan.
Johnson allegedly drove north to Kanan Dume Road where the two men got into a Chevrolet Lumina. Bailey allegedly returned the sedan to a car rental lot.
The men were arrested by sheriff’s deputies after a police pursuit in which they lost control of the Lumina and crashed into a concrete divider on the San Diego Freeway.
Bailey, who lived with Edwards, surrendered to deputies at the Malibu courthouse Sept. 15.
