The Waves, who recorded their fourth shutout of the season on Wednesday with a 2-0 victory over the Vancouver 86ers, host the El Paso Patriots in an A-League soccer game at 7 tonight in Santa Ana Stadium.

The Waves (6-4) are in first place in the Pacific Division, eight points ahead of San Diego. El Paso is 2-2.

Tonight’s game features the return of Jason Boyce, who has been out since April 29 serving a three-game red-card suspension. Boyce has two goals and a league-high four assists in seven games. Steve Patterson, the Waves’ second-leading scorer with three goals and one assist in five games, is questionable as he is recovering from an Achilles’ tendon and ankle strain.

BASEBALL

Edison High’s Tom Duggan has resigned as varsity baseball coach to take a job as vice principal at Aliso Viejo Christian School.

Duggan, who coached the Chargers for five seasons, compiled a 72-60-1 record and reached the second round of the Division II playoffs in 1998 and ’99. This year’s team finished 14-11-1 and in fourth place in the Sunset League.

“The opportunity came for me to give back to the Lord and the church and my family,” said Duggan, a 1981 Edison graduate. “It happened suddenly, but it’s going to be a very positive move and something I felt I needed to do.”

Duggan’s daughter, Kylie, will attend the Aliso Viejo school (grades K-8) next year and his son, Brooks, will attend the following year.

Said Edison Athletic Director Bruce Belcher: “[Duggan] is a true Charger. He was a player here, a student here, and he brought a lot of vitality to the baseball program and the teaching staff. We’re going to miss that a lot.”
