Petkovsek Will Go on Disabled List

Mark Petkovsek, the Angels’ most reliable reliever last season, will be placed on the 15-day disabled list today because of viral syndrome, the club announced Monday.

Right-hander Brian Cooper will be activated and start tonight’s game in Minnesota.

Manager Mike Scioscia’s pitching staff also has Jason Dickson, Tim Belcher, Ken Hill and Kent Mercker on the disabled list, and Ramon Ortiz ailing with a sore back in the minor leagues.

The Petkovsek transaction is retroactive to May 17; he will be eligible to return June 1.

A 10-game winner last season, Petkovsek is 2-2 with a 7.13 ERA in 19 appearances. He arrived at the ballpark Friday with what he described as flu-like symptoms, including headache, fever and dehydration.

Mo Vaughn batted .429 with two home runs and seven runs batted in in series against Baltimore and Kansas City, the second half of the Angels’ 12-game homestand. Vaughn now has 15 home runs and 42 RBIs, both among league leaders.

“I don’t call it a stretch or a streak,” Vaughn said, “because then you feel like you can’t be consistent, that it’s only going to happen for a certain time period.”
