Guest Chef Brings Bologna to Tanino

Are Two Chefs Better Than One?: Tanino, the Italian restaurant run by Tanino and Calogero Drago, has a guest chef for the month of June. Anna Bevini, who has known Tanino Drago for the last five years, adds dishes from her native Bologna to the restaurant’s regular menu, including baby tortelloni stuffed with pheasant in black truffle and pheasant sauce and marinated Adriatic Sea tuna with sweet and sour baby onions from Cremona.

Lazy Sunday Dining: Reign, Keyshawn Johnson’s Southern restaurant, adds a Sunday champagne buffet to its repertoire, starting Sunday, with a carving station for filet mignon and young turkey, another table for country-fried chicken and short ribs, still another for seafood, plus soups, salads, appetizers and desserts. The tab, including champagne, is $25. Brunch hours are noon to 8 p.m.

Chianti: Four picnic boxes are available here. Sample: grilled swordfish sandwich, endive salad with Gorgonzola and caramelized walnuts and a selection of fresh berries. Cha Cha Cha, Encino: The deal here is Caribbean lunches. Jamaican Treat is jerk chicken, pasta salad, cole slaw and dessert. Street Thomas is poached salmon with tropical salsa, pasta salad, Caesar salad, rolls and dessert. Meals run $17 to $23 per person. Such sides as ceviche and baked artichokes cost extra. Dining With Andre: This new “Provencal takerie” is in a 1920s building next to the Fremont Centre Theatre in South Pasadena. It has four picnic menus for take-out, with offerings such as mushroom pa^te with tomato-basil coulis, poached salmon medallions, green salad, French country bread with olive relish (tapenade) and petits fours. Food and Wine Garage: This new grocery store in Northridge owned by Whole Foods Market has a 1950s gas station theme. That’s right--patrons enter through a garage door and navigate past food islands and the occasional gas pump. The prepared foods department has wrap sandwiches (sample: chicken and spinach, $3.99), salads (chicken salad is $3.49/8 ounces; eggless tofu salad is $1.99/8 ounces) and dips (flavored hummus runs $1.49/8 ounces). Joan’s on Third: This specialist in foods to go offers a choice of seven meals, including entrees, side dishes, desserts and bread. Prices range from $16 to $28 a head. The Starlight Supper ($24) is grilled maple-rosemary chicken breast with grilled vegetables and “flattened” new potatoes. The vegetarian Summer Symphony ($18) includes Blue Lake green beans with heirloom tomatoes, basil, garlic and goat cheese. La Cachette: Five picnic meals are available at this French restaurant. Menus are between $25 and $28 per person and include an appetizer, entree, dessert and cookies.
