HOW IT HAPPENED

Share

The Cubs were rallying against Dodger closer Jeff Shaw. There was one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, one run already in and runners at second and third.

With fans celebrating Julio Zuleta’s run-scoring double, Dodger players and coaches raced from the field and dugout to the visitors’ bullpen. Backup catcher Chad Kreuter was allegedly struck in the head by a fan, who also took his cap, while he sat in the uncovered area.

Kreuter saw the fan slip on steps while fleeing, so he entered the stands along the right-field line. He wanted to hold the fan until security came, but the fan got away and Kreuter found himself surrounded by fans.

Kreuter’s teammates and coaches came to his aid, triggering several fights that were captured by TV cameras.

Umpires and Chicago Cub coaches helped restore order after a nine-minute delay. Shaw worked out of the jam, retiring former Dodger Eric Young on an infield popup and Ricky Gutierrez on a fly ball to right to preserve the Dodgers’ 6-5 victory.

Commissioner Bud Selig assigned Frank Robinson and Kevin Hallinan, members of his executive staff, to lead the investigation into the melee. Three fans were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct.

Chicago police identified the men as James Maness, 31, of Chicago; Ronald Camacho, 32, of Chicago; and Charles Carlin, 20, of Des Plaines, Ill.They were each released on $75 bail or bond, and are scheduled to appear June 19 in Cook County Circuit Court.
