City Takes Over Empty Hospital in Bid to Revive It

LONG BEACH — The city took possession of the empty Long Beach Community Medical Center on Tuesday, the latest step in an effort to revive the facility.
The 261-bed hospital closed last month after suffering operating losses. But the Save Our Neighborhood Hospital Committee, a nonprofit organization set up by medical center doctors, nurses and local residents, is raising money to reopen it as a smaller facility, with fewer than 75 beds.
As part of that effort, the facility’s previous owner, Catholic Healthcare West, agreed to turn the hospital over to the city.
The official transfer Tuesday was a formality. The future of the hospital now turns on whether the nonprofit group can complete a $4-million fund-raising campaign over the next month. The committee is about $1.5 million short of its goal.
The money is needed for a $25-million financing package to reopen the hospital, according to the nonprofit group.
