Co-Founder of Farm Workers Union Still in Critical Condition

Share

Dolores Huerta, co-founder of the United Farm Workers of America, remained in critical but stable condition Tuesday at a Bakersfield hospital, two days after surgery to stop internal bleeding.

Huerta, 70, who stepped down as the union’s secretary-treasurer in September, originally was admitted to Heart Hospital last Wednesday for a bleeding ulcer, then was readmitted Sunday when her condition worsened.

Doctors discovered a rare condition that creates an opening in an artery serving the intestines, said family and union leaders. They said Huerta had required repeated blood transfusions over several days.

Huerta, who started the farm workers union with Cesar Chavez in 1962, had planned this weekend to participate in a get-out-the-vote tour for Democratic presidential contender Al Gore.
