Mayor Facing Felony Charges Says He Won’t Seek Reelection
Six-term Mayor Robert Bartlett said Wednesday he would not seek reelection next March.
Bartlett faces felony charges in San Bernardino that he abused and threatened to kill his clandestine girlfriend. He denies the allegations.
In April, Monica Godfrey, 35, told San Bernardino police that Bartlett had forced her into a car and threatened to throw her off a nearby bridge. Last year, she received a restraining order against him.
At the time of the April allegations, Godfrey was six months pregnant with her second child fathered by Bartlett.
His trial is set for Dec. 13 in San Bernardino Superior Court. Bartlett, a Monrovia native, was first elected to the City Council in 1974 and appointed mayor two years later. He was first elected to a two-year mayoral term in 1988.
