Donated Tree to Be Planted at Campus
The first of more than 1,000 trees will be planted today as members of Ventura County’s nursery industry help to create an arboretum at the planned Cal State Channel Islands campus.
“These trees are an investment in clean air for future generations of students,” said George Dutra, associate vice president for facilities and operations for the university. “And the whole community will appreciate the beauty they will add to our campus.”
Nursery owners John Boething of Boething Treeland Nursery Co. in Woodland Hills and Stuart Sperber of Fillmore-based Valley Crest Tree Co. are spearheading the donation from the nursery industry.
Camarillo City Councilman Mike Morgan and California Nurserymen’s Assn. President Chris Ono will join the two nursery owners, community leaders and university representatives in planting the first tree.
Boething said most of the trees, which are California natives and Mediterranean specimens, will be planted in the eastern part of the Camarillo campus, where residential housing for faculty and staff is planned.
Boething, who has made similar donations to Stanford University and UCLA, said he hopes that each tree will bear an informational plaque and serve as a living educational resource for students.
