Rebecca N. Romero; Longtime County Resident

Rebecca N. Romero, a former citrus packer and longtime county resident, died in Fillmore on Sunday after a lengthy illness. She was 88.

She was born Dec. 28, 1911, in Mexico and was a resident of Ventura County for the past 73 years after moving from Nebraska.

She married Charles Romero in 1931 and the couple made Santa Paula their home.

For 20 years she worked as a packer at the Sunkist packinghouse in Santa Paula.

She was also a member of St. Sebastian Church in Santa Paula.

Her daughter, Emma Hurtado of Ventura, said her mother had been ill for many years but enjoyed listening to music and watching television.

Romero was preceded in death by her husband in 1986.

In addition to her daughter, she is survived by sisters Rosa Gallardo of the San Fernando Valley, Frances Goena of Carpinteria, Esther Ramirez, Mary Reyes and Hope Cheek, all of Santa Paula, Jovita Alamillo of Pacoima and three grandsons and a great-granddaughter.

A funeral Mass is scheduled at 11 a.m. today at St. Sebastian Church in Santa Paula with the Rev. Michael Jennett officiating. Burial will follow at the Santa Paula Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Fillmore Convalescent Center at 188 B St., Fillmore, CA 93015.

Arrangements are under the direction of Pierce Bros. Stetler Mortuary in Santa Paula.
