Matt Newton threw for 298 yards and three touchdowns, and Cecil Sapp ran for 119 yards and two scores as Colorado State defeated Brigham Young, 45-21, on a snowy Thursday night.

The victory was Colorado State’s first over the Cougars at home since 1975 and put the Rams, 8-1 and 5-0 in the Mountain West Conference, a step closer to clinching their fifth conference title in eight seasons.

BYU (4-6, 2-3) was eliminated from bowl consideration, meaning its Nov. 24 trip to Utah will be the final game for Coach LaVell Edwards, who is retiring after 29 seasons.

Edwards lost to Colorado State for only the fifth time in 24 games, and the outcome was never in doubt after the first half.

The Rams, who improved to 18-2 in November games under Coach Sonny Lubick, led 38-0 at halftime.

Colorado State’s 45 points were the most it has scored against BYU in the history of the 78-year series. The previous high came in a 36-22 victory in 1965. The Rams also held a 463-177 advantage in total yards.
