Child-Care Seminars Offered For Parents
A seminar for parents with children in day care will be offered Saturday at Mission College.
Parents will get hands-on training from clinical psychologist Jeffrey Morrow in such subjects as establishing family rules, giving praise and practicing effective verbal confrontation, said Kerby T. Alvy, executive director of the Studio City-based Center for the Improvement of Child Caring, which is organizing the seminar.
“Raising kids today is harder than it’s ever been,” Alvy said. “These types of seminars are based on latest research on what’s helping [parents]. The issue is getting that to the American parent.”
Another seminar on early childhood parenting is planned for Dec. 16 at Cal State Northridge. Both seminars are being offered through a grant from Proposition 10, a 1998 measure that added a 50-cents-per-pack tax on cigarettes to raise money to expand programs for children under 5.
The grant provides free admission for parents with a child attending a child-care center or family day care home. Admission otherwise is $55 for Saturday’s seminar and $75 for the December event.
