Congolese singer Sam Mangwana will perform Friday night at Cal State Northridge. Mangwana and his nine-piece band combine melodic and rhythmic elements of African, Caribbean, Latin and European music to create Congolese rumba or soukous. Mangwana’s 1998 CD “Galo Negro” featured his soulful vocals backed by guitar, accordion, driving percussion and a female chorus.

A Cappella Concert

The West Valley Chorus will give a concert Saturday night at the Madrid Theatre in Canoga Park. The all-female ensemble sings in four-part harmony, a cappella barbershop-style. The chorus and its featured quartets sing all kinds of music from swing to Broadway show tunes.

Celtic Music

The Mulligans, a popular Southern California Irish band for more than 25 years, will play Sunday afternoon in North Hollywood. The group, which specializes in traditional Irish music, consists of Terry McCartin, Dennis Murphy and Roy Murray.

Guitar Music

Jazz guitarist Ralph Towner will headline International Guitar Night on Tuesday at Cal State Northridge. The event provides a forum for some of the world’s most original guitar players to appear together in concert. Towner first came to national prominence in 1971 for his 12-string guitar work on Weather Report’s “I Sing the Body Electric.” Over the years, he has participated in historic collaborations with such legendary jazz figures as Keith Jarrett, Wayne Shorter and Egberto Gismonte. In addition to performing, Towner is a prolific composer and many of his compositions have been performed by orchestras around the world. Besides Towner, Brazilian Marco Pereira, Italian Antonio Calogero and American Brian Gore will perform.
