The controversial plans to erect an elementary school in the McFadden park, a site in the middle of a minority neighborhood, gained a major foothold Tuesday when council members agreed to sell the parkland to the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District.

School officials offered $3.2 million for the site but council members directed staff members to negotiate the price and agree on a sum.

For the past two years school district officials have sought to build a school in the McFadden park area where, they contend, about 800 children would be served.
