‘The Lonesome West’ at South Coast Rep

The bleak and violent rural Irish world of Martin McDonagh will unfold again at South Coast Repertory with “The Lonesome West,” which will have its West Coast premiere March 13 and run through April 15 on the Second Stage. The Costa Mesa theater staged its first McDonagh play, “The Beauty Queen of Leenane,” in March and April of this year.
When “The Lonesome West” opened in New York in 1999, Newsday critic Linda Winer likened it to Sam Shepard’s “True West” in its account of two brothers, “desperate . . . lonely and sexually frustrated,” wreaking havoc upon each other. Or as a South Coast Rep press release puts it, they “make Cain and Abel look like the Hardy Boys.”
