EARNINGS

Maxicare Health Plans Inc. reported a third-quarter loss of $7.8 million, or 42 cents a share, vs. net income of $1.3 million, or 7 cents, a year ago. The latest results reflect a $2.5-million charge for losses associated with capitated provider arrangements. Los Angeles-based Maxicare said revenue rose 2% to $181.8 million.

* ARV Assisted Living Inc. said its third-quarter net loss narrowed to $1.6 million, or 9 cents a share, from $2.4 million, or 15 cents, a year ago as it trimmed expenses. Revenue edged down to $33.7 million from $34 million, the Costa Mesa-based company said.
