SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Two motorists were killed early Friday, a 60-year-old man traveling on the southbound San Diego Freeway and an 18-year-old woman driving on a rural road in Trabuco Canyon.

A big-rig collided with a sedan about 3 a.m. just north of Warner Avenue in Fountain Valley, killing Paul Betbadal of Oceanside and shutting down the southbound San Diego Freeway for about four hours, authorities said.

Betbadal died at the scene, said California Highway Patrol Officer Mark Reeves. The freeway reopened about 7:15 a.m., he said, but the cause of the collision was still under investigation.

In Trabuco Canyon, Sarah Graham died when her Volkswagen Jetta struck a dirt embankment on the northbound side of Live Oak Canyon Road near the Hamilton Truck Trail. Graham apparently lost control of her car moments before the crash, Reeves said.

Graham, who was wearing a seat belt, was partially ejected from the car, suffering fatal injuries. She died at the scene, Reeves said. The cause of the crash was under investigation.

On Wednesday night, an 81-year-old Placentia woman was killed and three other people were seriously injured in a traffic accident in Placentia.
