Hasek Helps Sabres Extend Devils’ Streak

Dominik Hasek made 23 saves and posted his second consecutive shutout as the Buffalo Sabres defeated the New Jersey Devils, 4-0, Saturday night at East Rutherford, N.J.

The defending Stanley Cup-champion Devils have lost five consecutive games, their longest losing streak since January 1991, and the loss also extended their winless streak to six games.

The streak has dropped the Devils into a tie for last place in the Atlantic Division with the New York Islanders.

Jean-Pierre Dumont, Dave Andreychuk, Rhett Warrener and Maxim Afinogenov scored against Martin Brodeur, who returned to the Devils’ net despite being knocked out of Friday night’s game after falling and hitting his head on the ice.

St. Louis 5, Vancouver 2--Pavol Demitra scored twice in 25 seconds and rookie goalie Brent Johnson stopped 27 shots at Vancouver as the Blues extended their unbeaten streak to 10 games.

Demitra’s goals, at 12:48 and 13:13 of the third period, broke a 2-2 tie and helped the Blues improve to 11-2-3, the best start in franchise history.

Boston 2, Nashville 2--Sergei Samsonov scored a power-play goal with 13 seconds left in regulation to lift the Bruins into the tie at Boston.

Nashville took a 1-0 lead when Scott Hartnell scored 2:40 into the game.

Bruin goalie Byron Dafoe returned after missing 11 games because of a hamstring injury and was loudly booed after allowing a goal on Nashville’s first shot.

Ken Belanger tied the score, 1-1, 54 seconds into the second.

Philadelphia 4, Ottawa 3--Simon Gagne scored from just inside the red line early in the third period to lead the Flyers at Philadelphia.

Gagne’s 85-foot slap shot, 1:42 into the final period, bounced off the outstretched glove of goalie Patrick Lalime.

San Jose 4, N.Y. Islanders 0--Evgeni Nabokov stopped 24 shots for his second shutout to lead the Sharks at Uniondale, N.Y.

Todd Harvey, Marco Sturm, Bryan Marchment and Vincent Damphousse scored for the Sharks, who won for the eighth time in 11 games (8-1-2).

Calgary 4, Tampa Bay 3--Oleg Saprykin, who had only one goal in 21 career games, scored twice as the Flames won at Tampa, Fla.

Jarome Iginla and Marc Savard also scored for the Flames, who are undefeated in three games (2-0-1).

Pittsburgh 5, Edmonton 2--Jaromir Jagr scored his 11th goal early in the third period to lift the Penguins at Pittsburgh. Alexei Kovalev, Robert Lang, Josef Beranek and Milan Kraft also scored for the Penguins.

Mike Grier and Chad Kilger had the Oilers’ goals.

Columbus 2, Phoenix 1--Steve Heinze had a goal and an assist to lead the expansion Blue Jackets at Columbus, ending the Coyotes’ eight-game road unbeaten streak.

Toronto 3, Chicago 3--Eric Daze scored his second goal of the game with six seconds left in regulation to lift Chicago to a tie at Toronto.

Dallas 2, Montreal 0--Ed Belfour stopped 24 shots for his 52nd shutout and Jamie Langenbrunner and Mike Keane scored as the Stars won at Dallas.

Around the NHL

Pittsburgh defenseman Bob Boughner broke his right wrist early in the first period. Boughner was injured when he collided with Igor Ulanov and is expected to miss six to eight weeks.
